Having grown up with immigrant parents, American politics was never a topic of discussion in Kristina’s home. When Kristina took her first government class in high school, everything was very foreign but incredibly fascinating. Kristina instantly fell in love with the topics she learned about and felt drawn to major in political science. She now plans on going to law school after college.

Kristina is also a member of Pre-Law Women of UNLV, a community that helps women pursue a career in the legal field.

Chloe chose to major in sociology and psychology because she finds both areas fascinating and vitally important. She wants to be able to understand social issues at the structural and individual level so that she can help spark change. Her current area of interest is public health from a sociological lens. She hopes to do work in the future that contributes to the elimination of health disparities and a more equitable health system.

Chloe is also a member of the Psi Chi International Honor Society of Psychology and the First Gen Club.

Christian chose to major in social science studies because he wanted to be able to see the world through many lenses and build a wide background in knowledge. His major offers him the freedom to explore the social sciences and the opportunity to dive into many different disciplines. He wants to use what he learns to help his community in what ways he can, be it through education, research, advocacy, etc.

Christian is also the events chair for the Sociology Club and works part time at a movie theater.

Kahleia has always been passionate about history, as she finds it exciting to learn about the historical background of things that make up our modern world. Her ultimate goal is to take all her knowledge to teach others about history in a way that is easily understood.

Kahleia has observed that to some, history is a boring field that has no grounds. However, she believes that this perspective comes from non-historians viewing history as something that’s incomprehensible. Through her efforts, she plans to make history understandable and useful to the public to help aid in introspection and decision making.

Outside of the COLA Dean’s Advisory Council, Kahleia works part time as a birthday presenter at the Discovery Children’s Museum. She originally started as a volunteer for the museum, and then became a Youthworks Intern during high school before taking on her current role.

Nicole has always been interested in learning more about government structures and its functions, as she believes that gaining a deeper understanding of politics is an important part of being an informed citizen. Chris chose to major in psychology because he took a psychology course in high school that sparked his interest in the career. After completing the course, he realized that he always loved the feeling of helping others and figured that he will be able to do what he loves for a living by being in the psychology field. His current plan is to obtain a Ph.D. in clinical psychology to help those who struggle with behavioral, emotional, and mental disorders.

Chris is also a member of the Psychology Club, an RA for the Adolescent and Child Trauma (ACT) side of the CHARISMA Lab, and works part time as a COLA 100LA peer mentor.

Noelani chose to major in psychology because being able to understand people and their habits is such an integral part of any job, especially in the medical field. On the surface, bedside manners and being able to empathize with people seems easy, but those skills can be difficult for many to master. She believes that her major can strengthen her existing skills and better prepare her for her career goals and future in psychiatry.

As an Indigenous Latina, Yvette strives to bring a multicultural perspective to psychology, policy, higher education, and community advocacy. She chose psychology as her major to better understand the complexities of the human mind, in hopes of having a strong foundation on which to build communities of solidarity. Yvette believes that psychology is a field that contributes to the well-being and advancement of our societies, but the highest potential of this field is hindered without the valuable contributions of diverse scholars. Ultimately, she would like to earn her Ph.D. in clinical psychology and decolonize the academic narratives in trauma research and clinical practice.

Yvette is also a Psi Chi member and works part-time as a community organizer focused on mobilizing the Latinx community toward civic engagement. She also volunteers her time with other non-profits that specialize in fighting for human rights for women, LGBTQ+ folks, and underserved BIPOC communities.

Brooklyn chose to major in English and minor in Spanish because she finds language to be beautiful. To her, it represents the desire to connect with others and understand other people. She loves the ways people use language and how it is constantly evolving to keep up with modern needs. She also enjoys how language allows her to herself in stories and other vital forms of expression.

Brooklyn is also the copy editor for Beyond Thought Creative Arts Journal.

Political science has always been an interesting topic to Stephanie, as she believes that it is extremely important to understand how our society functions. Another main reason why she chose to pursue a political science degree was due to the large impact the field has on people in society, especially when people better understand how society functions as a whole. Overall, Stephanie believes that political science is vital to create and implement better solutions for problems that our world faces today.

Stephanie also serves as the treasurer and joint liaison for the Silver Wings RSO.

Angelica is a first generation student pursuing her bachelor of arts in gender and sexuality studies with a minor in psychology. She is deeply passionate about social justice topics (especially gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and wealth inequality) and loves learning about feminism because it affects so many aspects of everyday life. She hopes to help cultivate positive change in her community with her degree.

Max chose political science as his major because he has been interested in politics since a young age. He is interested in the ways that people make their political choices and how our society has reached the political climate that we are in now and have been in the past. He believes that understanding politics can make anyone a better-informed global citizen and can help develop potential solutions to help out local communities.

Max is also the president of The Chinese Corner and is a research assistant for the Interactive Measurement Lab.

Growing up, Maxim was always interested in history and the world around him. In elementary school, he was not sure about what one singular thing he was really interested in, so he pursued a variety of hobbies and learned about a wide range of topics. It was in middle school that Maxim first acquired a keen interest in politics. He found that by involving himself in learning about politics, he eventually developed a passion for it that still continues to this day. Now, Maxim enjoys that his major extends his intellectual pursuit of the subject and he does not see himself ever getting tired of it.

Betzabel chose to major in psychology because she has personally dealt with mental health obstacles. She wasn’t aware of it many times, but when she took one psychology class during her sophomore year of high school, Betzabel learned more about herself than she ever had in her entire life. She learned how to face her own problems instead of avoiding them. Since she did not get help from others until then, she is determined to help others like her with their own mental health.

Betzabel is also a member of the First Generation Club, Psychology Club, and the Feminist club. She is also in the Sigma Sigma Sigma (or Tri Sigma) and Phi Sigma Phi sororities.

Thomas has always been curious about different cultures from different time periods and their health. Studying both anthropology and public health can offer a unique and complementary perspective on issues related to human health and well-being, both enabling a positive impact in the community. Importantly, both majors offer me the flexibility to explore and specialize in various areas of interest. He is also a member Rebel Reads YA, Epicurean Society, and Anthropology Society. Thomas is also a Research Assistant for Forensic Anthropology and Bioarcheology Lab. He also works part-time as a Undergraduate research for a grant funded by the National Institute of Justice.

Having been born and raised in the City of Las Vegas, Brandon recognized early in his life that UNLV was a place that he would someday want to call home. However, as a descendant of a once lower-income family, a student who struggled throughout grade school, and a thought-to-be problem child early in his life, college life was not meant to be in the cards for him. With childhood hopes of one day becoming a Division 1 athlete, Brandon would come to find his true life's purpose later in life and learn how to take his life into his own hands; flipping the script, he sought to help others recognize their own purpose and provide them with a voice while at the same time inspiring and motivating them to go after their true aspirations. Now a third-year psychology undergrad and a new member of DSAC, Brandon hopes to use his platform and life experiences to continue along his life's journey, providing resources to those in need, as he had once been, and serving the community he grew up in and continues to call home.

Ryan is a first-generation Freshman currently pursuing a double baccalaureate in History and Political Science with the Liberal Arts College and the Honors College, with intentions to go to law school and pursue a career in the legal field. It was in high school that he began his interest and exposure to the legal field when he sought the opportunity to apply, in a real-world setting, legal concepts taught in the magnet law program offered at Canyon Springs High School and the Leadership and Law Preparatory Academy (LLPA) in North Las Vegas. It was also in high school that he had a passion for community service and advocacy efforts, in addition to continuing to be a source of reliable information that I came across to share with my many colleagues. Since High School, he has been interested in exploring various opportunities in the local legal community and academia. Ryan continues to be exposed to the legal community by entering as a second-year mentee with the Boyd Law Schools’ La Voz Huellas 4-tier Mentorship Program as he took part in several networking occasions, as well as soon-to-be member with the Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) International Law fraternity. He is currently involved in several extracurriculars at UNLV that would nurture my motivation to be engaged with community partners and students. For the 2023-2024 school year, Ryan is a member of the FYE’s First-Year Experience Roundtable and the SLL’s Navigators Mentorship Program. He is also a Mentor at my high school with the TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) pre-college program associated with the Center of Academic Enrichment & Outreach Office (CAEO). As a mentor, Ryan assist high school students with disadvantaged backgrounds to help them reach their plans for post-secondary education and career goals and share my transition experience to college. This includes guidance in FAFSA and college applications, assisting and organizing college tours, and providing relevant resources and sources of information that help nurture a pathway for the student. Lastly, he am currently volunteering with the Rebel Event Board (REB) to set up their school year events.

For a few years now Philosophy has been Jeshua's passion. Interested especially in metaphysics, meta-ethics, and political philosophy, they believe that philosophy is necessary for us to adequately think the social problems of our day, rather than merely thinking about them within a given framework, but producing new concepts which consider them as they unfold. Beyond this, they strongly affirm that education and the communication of information are especially conducive to social good and that serious interaction with philosophy has the deepest educational value. Given this, they seek to generate interest in philosophy as a major, minor, or passion within the student body. So far, Jeshua has gotten the privilege of being this year's co-president of the Neon Stoa Philosophy club, which they assist in organizing and advertising. They are grateful for any and all further opportunities they have to bring philosophy outside of the classroom into the real world, or by interaction with and application to other disciplines and fields.

Edward Delgado-Ochoa is a first generation Honors College student pursuing a major in Political Science with a minor in the Concentration of Law and Justice, with an interest in adding the Brookings Public Policy minor. Because of Edward’s experiences with domestic abuse, he aspires to become an attorney to aid the Latino community with crossing the cultural barriers of seeking a path outside of toxic relationships. During a summer internship with the City of North Las Vegas, Edward was able to shadow and meet deputy attorneys, justices, and state senators which furthered his interest in the justice and political systems. Edward is a determined individual, setting goals and priorities on his planner and getting them done in due time. He also values human connection as it cultivates friendships and new perspectives on life. Edward is a member of the Engelstad Scholars Program, UNLV Car Club, and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

My name is Jacob Stalk, I am a Board Member of Share Village Las Vegas, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness, poverty, and hunger in the United States. We provide affordable housing for over 500 veterans and families nightly with both transitional and permanent affordable rental housing. I am an Undergraduate Student studying majors of Real Estate, Political Science, and Finance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I heavily involve myself with the Las Vegas community to better understand and learn how our society can solve critical issues such as homelessness and how I can contribute as a future philanthropist and placemaker for our community.

I am a member of the Latin Chamber of Commerce Nevada Inc., Urban Land Institute (ULI), Downtown Vegas Alliance, the Vegas Chamber, and Hispanics in Politics. I heavily involve myself with the community to better understand and learn how our society can solve critical issues such as homelessness.

My educational journey will fuel the pursuit of my passion of becoming a leader in my community, leading the charge for how our society can transform the built environment, especially in the areas where our most vulnerable community members need the utmost help.

Makayla is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in efforts to gain a deeper insight into human behavior and development. She intends to utilize this knowledge in her career path. At an early age, Makayla aspired to become a lawyer turned judge. Upon graduation, she plans to attend Boyd School of Law. Makayla currently serves as the Diversity Outreach Coordinator for UNLV’s Residence Hall Association. She is a member of Huellas Mentorship Program for Law, a program that creates a pipeline to the legal profession for underrepresented students, Black Student Organization, Student Organization of LatinX, Psychology Club and works part-time as a camp counselor and instructor for City of Las Vegas’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Sophie Dagostino is a Sophomore at the University of Nevada Las Vegas majoring in Gender and Sexuality Studies with a minor in Global Entrepreneurship. She is the founder of the school’s Feminist Club where she currently serves as the president. Sophie has been described as a passionate and goal-oriented leader by those around her. As an involved member of her school community, a full-time student, and a restaurant manager, Sophie dedicates all that she can to the pursuit of her dreams.

Shayla is a pre-medical anthropology major with an immense passion for the sciences and medicine. She chose to be an anthropology major because it is an umbrella for gravitating subjects such as paleontology, archaeology, forensic science, and much more. At a young age, she found herself intrigued with the world’s history and culture, and how it affected society and individuals. She is a first generation Mexican-American college student and she aspires to become the first physician in her family history. Shayla's dream is to serve her patients and their healthcare long term while building a deep relationship, especially to the Latino community. It is important to her to give back to the Latino community in Las Vegas, specifically to the individuals that face worries visiting a physician due to immigration status and/or a language barrier. Shayla is also the Co-Vice President of Rebel Reads YA, and the Educational Outreach Chair of Latino Pre-Medical Student Association. During her free time, she volunteers as a translator at mobile free health clinics targeted towards Latino individuals who are undocumented and/or don’t have health insurance.

Flynn is passionate about mental health and brain health and particularly in advocating for an increase of its access within marginalized communities. He is involved in psychology research as well as a patient care coordinator for psychiatric settings, and is an E-board member for the Neuroscience organization and a member of PSI CHI.
