Shut the Sash is a program in SEB designed to educate occupants on the importance of closing the sashes on the fume hoods in the building. Fume hoods are actually a great expense in laboratory buildings because each cubic foot of air they exhaust must be replaced with incoming air that has to be cooled or heated. This can be very energy intensive in Las Vegas’s extreme climate. The fume hoods in the SEB are the latest technology variable air volume fume hoods, which means they adjust the amount of air exhausted from the hood while maintaining a constant face velocity protecting the user no matter the sash height. When the sash is open a single hood can cost up to $6,500 a year in air conditioning cost. When the sash is closed this cost is reduced by 85 percent.
