John P. Tuman is Executive Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and Professor (tenured) of Political Science, UNLV.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, his M.A. from the University of Chicago, and his B.A. (with High Honors) from the University of California, Berkeley. He teaches courses on Comparative Politics and International Relations, with a focus on Latin America, political economy, and foreign policy. Professor Tuman has served in a variety of administrative positions at UNLV, including as Chair of the Department of Political Science (2009 to 2018), Program Chair of the Latin American Studies major (2002 to 2013), and Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies (2004 to 2013).

Professor Tuman is co-author of Latinos in Nevada: A Political, Economic, and Social Profile (University of Nevada Press, 2021).  He is also author of Reshaping the North American Automobile Industry: Restructuring, Corporatism and Union Democracy in Mexico (Routledge/Continuum, 2003 [reprint, 2015]), The North American Auto Industry Beyond NAFTA: Productivity and Industrial Relations (Center for Strategic & International Studies, 2000), and Latin American Migrants in the Las Vegas Valley: Civic Engagement and Political Participation (Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, 2009).  He co-edited two books, Transforming the Latin American Automobile Industry: Unions, Workers, and the Politics of Restructuring (M.E. Sharpe, 1998 [Routledge reprint, 2016]), and Voices and Visions: 2008 Proceedings of the Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies (Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies, 2010). In addition, he has coauthored several working papers for Brookings Mountain West.

He has published a number of refereed articles in journals such as Political Research Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, Growth and Change, Party Politics, Foreign Policy Analysis, Latin American Research Review, Studies in Comparative International Development, International Interactions, International Relations of the Asia Pacific, Public Performance and Management Review, State and Local Government Review, Industrial Relations Journal, Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Labor and Society, Latin American Policy, Global Health Governance, and Nevada Journal of Public Health.

Professor Tuman is the past president of the Pacific Coast Council of Latin American Studies (PCCLAS) and the International Studies Association-West. He continues service of the Executive Committee of PCCLAS, and on the Editorial Board of Global Health Governance. He has been interviewed widely in outlets such as The Economist, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, BBC Radio, Reforma, Deutsche Welle, and several other national and international newspapers and media outlets.
