University Forum Lecture Series presents "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover: New Media and Breaking Up" a talk by Ilana Gershon, department of anthropology, Indiana University.
Nowadays there are so many ways to end relationships. One can text “it’s over.” Or leave a voice mail, or “have the talk” by instant messaging. It is still ideal to breakup in person, but in actual practice, people use a wide variety of media to breakup. Why does it matter if the breakup happens by Facebook or face-to-face? A breakup is a breakup. Yet for many people, how one breaks up is as important as the fact that they have broken up. In this talk Dr. Gershon examines people’s complicated interpretations for explaining how a medium affects a message.
This event is free and open to the public.
