Spring 2011 Senior Design Competition
The senior design project is a part of every UNLV engineering student’s academic experience. A capstone to the student’s educational career, the senior design project encourages the student to use everything learned in the engineering program to create a practical, real-world solution to an engineering challenge. Each student chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this program designed to stimulate engineering, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The Senior Design Competition held each semester, helps to focus the students in increasing the quality and potential for commercial application for their design projects. The yearly Senior Design Dinner and Awards celebrates the students’ achievements and provides their families, faculty, and the greater Las Vegas community an opportunity to share in the excitement of the students’ work.
In 2010 the deans of the College of Engineering and the College of Business, Dr. Rama Venkat and Dr. Paul Jarley, created a collaborative effort between the seniors of both colleges to partner their engineering projects with business plans. In its first year, the effort has bore much fruit. One of the engineering teams has been awarded a provisional patent and Scuba Solutions, a business plan based on one of the engineering projects, was named the winner of the 2011 Southern Nevada Business Plan Competition at an event inside the Stan Fulton building on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. The new business is set to receive $78,950 in cash and prizes, including legal services from Greenberg Traurig and marketing help from CIM Marketing Partners. The Las Vegas Business Press is giving the winners $20,000 worth of advertising.
This year’s Senior Design Competition will take place on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Cox Pavilion. The Fred and Harriet Cox Awards Dinner follows later that evening at 6pm. The competition is open to the public.
