University Forum Lecture: Pasteurizing French Politics

When: Apr. 17, 2012, 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Campus Location: Marjorie Barrick Museum / Harry Reid Center
Office/Remote Location: Auditorium

The College of Liberal Arts presents the University Forum Lecture: Pasteurizing French Politics: The Transformation of the French Presidency and the Election of 2012, a talk by Arthur Goldhammer, senior research affiliate, Center for European Studies, Harvard University

Although the French president, like the American, is intended constitutionally to be an individual above all parties and interests, the reality is that French presidential elections are competitions of parties and coalitions.  In this lecture, a leading American expert on French politics analyzes the role of party coalitions in the 2012 campaign and discusses how, unlike the U.S. and contrary to American expectations about European politics, the dividing lines in recent years have not been left/right so much as center/extremes.
