A Reason to Smile
The Adopt-A-School program partners local at-risk elementary schools with UNLV, rewarding the students for their academic efforts while teaching them the importance of higher education. Activities include a book drive, spirit rally, and visits from UNLV athletes and staff.View photos and videos

The Nevada Healthy Homes Partnership a is a collaboration between UNLV and community partners to inspect and fix homes, making them safe and improving the living conditions of local residents.A Class for Everyone

UNLV Engelstad Scholars participated in the eighth-annual Goodie Two Shoes giveaway in October. The scholars, who form meaningful ties to the community through local service organizations, helped pass out new shoes and socks to more than 2,000 children. View videoMaking a Difference
The Rebel Service Council's DASH (Delivering and Serving Hope) program raises awareness of the hunger and homeless crisis in the Las Vegas area. Students give their time, attention, and meal credits toward making and delivering sandwiches to the local homeless.View video of the program
President Advocates for UNLV
President Neal Smatresk has been the face of UNLV in the community: leading the university through the budget crisis, trumpeting higher education's value to the community, and serving as the first education representative on the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce's Board of Trustees.It's an Honor
As part of the 2010 homecoming festivities, former Runnin' Rebel coach Jerry Tarkanian was given the UNLV Alumni Association Silver State Award for his contributions to UNLV and the community. Greg Anthony, who played for Tarkanian, was recognized as the association's Alumnus of the Year.Lucky Number Seven
The men's swim team won its seventh straight Mountain West Conference championship. Sophomore Cody Roberts was named swimmer of the year and Jim Reitz was honored as the conference's top coach.Raining Cats and Dogs

The Lady Rebels tennis team finished the Mountain West Conference regular season with a perfect 8-0 record. This is the team's third first-place finish since the conference debuted.The Gift of Light
Engineering students Wali Zaidi (pictured), Sammy Zaidi, and Christopher Belcher won the international Humanitarian Technology Challenge with the design of a solar-driven electrical power system that could bring electricity to remote areas in third-world countries.Read the full story
A Hole in Won
Therese Koelbaek was named the 2011 Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Year. The senior also won the MWC individual title with a seven-under par total of 209. In addition, junior Derek Ernst was selected as the MWC Men's Golfer of the Year for the second straight year. He also won the 2011 MWC men's golf individual title.A Rebel Returns
Former Runnin' Rebel Dave Rice became the first former player to be named head coach of the UNLV program. Rice played for two seasons as a reserve guard on two of Jerry Tarkanian's Final Four teams. Read what Rice says about returning to UNLVIt's a Home Run
Tim Chambers was named head baseball coach after 11 seasons leading the nationally ranked College of Southern Nevada program. Chambers has coached locally at the high school, junior college, and now Division I levels over the past two decades.Read the full story of Chambers' journey
The Best and the Brightest
Outstanding Graduates are selected by President Neal Smatresk based on academic achievements, community outreach, and their ability to overcome adversity. More than 6,000 students earned their degrees this academic year and were eligible to participate in either the winter 2010 or spring 2011 commencement ceremonies at the Thomas & Mack Center. The winter event marked the first time undergraduates wore red caps and gowns.Welcoming Students Back With a Bang
Premier UNLV kicked off the academic year, welcoming new and returning students to campus. The beloved tradition, which started in 1996, includes a cookout, live music, and the formation of the letters U-N-L-V by students holding flashlights.Helping Those Without
The College of Business and Three Square food bank hosted a Hunger Walk in October to provide food for those in need. The inaugural event brought in 262 pounds of food and $180 in donations.In Memoriam
The LB3 fundraiser was held in October in memory of Lindsay Bennett. The architecture student and Rebel Girl was killed by a drunk driver in 2009.Rich Cultural Traditions

Ansel Adams Exhibit

The UNLV Veterans Memorial commemorates and honors Las Vegas and UNLV service members from all wars and conflicts. The memorial, organized by the UNLV Student Veterans Organization, was dedicated Sept. 11 and sits at the base of the stairs near the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building.30 Years for a Campus Landmark

Campus radio station KUNV, operated by the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, celebrated its 30th anniversary. Students from a variety of majors work and volunteer at the station as announcers, producers, production managers, and programming coordinators.Practice Facility
UNLV broke ground in the fall on the Mendenhall Center, a 38,000-square-foot basketball facility funded by outside donations. The center will have two regulation-sized practice courts, locker rooms, strength and conditioning equipment, an academics area, and a team video room.Historic Structure
The Science and Engineering Building officially opened. The building supports innovative research approaches through collaboration among faculty in the sciences, engineering, health sciences, and other units on campus. At 205,779-square-foot, it has a 200-seat auditorium, labs, smart conference rooms, and a café.Making a Mark
The Guinn Millennium Scholarship Wall lists the more than 7,000 UNLV graduates who have benefited from the scholarship since 2000. The temporary installation, located inside the Student Union, also includes a history of the program and a biography of the late Kenny Guinn, who served both as Nevada governor and as interim UNLV president.Read the full story
