University Forum Lecture: Women Casino Workers

The College of Liberal Arts presents the University Forum Lecture "Women Casino Workers: An Appreciation Long Overdue" a talk by Susan Chandler, professor of social work, University of Nevada, Reno

Author Susan Chandler explores the untold stories of women’s labor within Nevada’s gaming industry.  The talk draws from her recently published book, Casino Women (Cornell, 2011), and ten years of interviews with women who worked as maids, cocktail waitresses, cooks, laundry workers, dealers and pit bosses.  She explores the persistence of gender-typed jobs, women’s coping strategies in a sexualized work place, and the pivotal role of the Culinary union.
