UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield and Executive Vice President and Provost Chris Heavey developed and sponsored the annual Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) Student Success Summit, introducing a new program each year featuring a nationally recognized speaker. The summit aims to collectively leverage the expertise of our campus community to address structural and cultural barriers that reduce equitable outcomes for our students. During the event, senior campus leadership shares their vision for student success, emphasizing UNLV's role and responsibilities as a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI), Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI).

The MSI Student Success Summit features engaging speakers, student and faculty panels, breakout sessions, performances, and tabletop discussions. The summit marks the start of MSI week, a dedicated week of student activities, events, and educational programs aimed at promoting innovative approaches to equity and inclusion in the classroom, fostering a passion for learning, and creating a sense of belonging. The summit highlights teaching techniques, support service models, and faculty and student research to enhance student success.

The summit is open to faculty, staff, and students. It features UNLV expert-led plenary sessions covering topics such as the significance of being an MSI for UNLV and best practices in educational equity.

Learning Outcomes

• Identify the critical elements of being a student-serving Minority-Serving Institution.
• Recognize that equitable student success outcomes result from faculty, staff, and student partnerships and intentional institutional programs, policies, and practices.
• Convey practical and proven practices that enhance servingness.
• Articulate actions at the individual, group, and institutional levels to better promote equitable student experiences and outcomes at UNLV.
